About the Whitney Museum of American Art:
The Whitney Museum of American Art was born out of the efforts of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Whitney saw the difficulties that artists had in selling their works and she wanted to support them. She did this by purchasing hundreds of pieces for her personal collection.

This NY Museum was opened in 1931, and it is dedicated to 20th and 21st century American art. When it first opened, it housed the personal collection of Whitney which contained about 600 pieces. Over the next several years, Whitney continued to add to her own collection and the Museum also began to accept works from other patrons.

Today, this Attraction in New York boasts one of the largest collections of 20th century American art. More than 19,000 objects are housed here, and the collection, which represents 2,900 artists, continues to grow.

Interesting facts about the Whitney Museum of American Art:

  • This NY Museum was the first museum dedicated to the work of artists who are still living.
  • The Whitney Museum of American Art will not sell any works by living artists. The reason for this is that there is a potential that doing so could harm the artist’s career. The Museum will, however, exchange works for another by the same artist.
