About Greenwich Village:
The Greenwich Village neighborhood is famous for being the epicenter of the beat movement, art and music scenes, and home to the bohemians of New York City. The mere mention of Greenwich Village conjures images of Andy Warhol entertaining guests at his gallery, or running into rock stars in one of The Village’s music venues.

While in the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s, Greenwich Village was indeed NYC’s avant-garde center, where the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground got their start and arguably it’s most celebrated epoch, this was not always the case and indeed the New York Attraction is very much different today than its golden age as the city’s bohemian enclave.

This New York Attraction was at one time an industrial park consisting mainly of warehouses and factories, many of which were abandoned. Due to the high rents in New York City, and minimal wages earned by artists, writers and others in the arts community, many notable characters ended up squatting in these buildings, which is how Greenwich Village became the “Vanguard Village” of the arts.

Today, with the gentrification of New York City, The Village is still the territory of the creative, but   instead of the up and coming squatting in abandoned warehouses, it is now millionaire movie stars in high priced apartments. The chance of bumping into Robert DeNiro or Emma Stone isn’t the only thing that draws visitors and locals to Greenwich Village these days. There’s no shortage of things to do and see in this neighborhood including Shopping, landmarks, world-class Dining, and music venues that feature top artists.

To get to the Village from our New York City Hotel, take the subway from Columbus Circle and get off at Sheridan Square. When you get to Greenwich Village, take a walk around historic Washington Square Park, recognizable by the landmark arch at the entrance. Weather permitting, pick up today’s issue of the famous Village Voice newspaper, sit in the park and try to blend in with the locals. The Village Voice is a great way to find out what’s happening in the Village.

Shopping in Greenwich Village is another fun Activity. At spots like Market NYC, indie fashion designers converge for patrons of couture to find unique pieces to add to their wardrobes. Hipsters will love searching for deals on odd items at Vintage Thrift West.  The Village is a great area for world-class New York City Restaurants. Craving Indian? Stop by Pondicheri for their take on this popular cuisine made with fresh ingredients collected every day. No matter what you feel like doing, you’ll find it in Greenwich Village, located near our New York City Hotel.
