Cathedral of St. John | NYC Attraction
The Cathedral of St. John is an NYC Attraction steeped in history and admired the world over.
The Cathedral of St. John is one of the most-photographed NYC Attractions. They offer several tours, so guests at our Hotel in NYC can learn about the history, architecture, and other features of this beautiful cathedral.
About the Cathedral of St. John:
For many visitors, a visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which is still home to an active congregation, is a must. Some come to study the architecture. Others want to gaze upon the impressive stained glass and other artwork while others want to explore the history of this NYC Attraction. It’s sometimes listed as the largest cathedral in the world, but this is contested by another cathedral in Liverpool. Whether or not it’s the largest, it is surely one of the most beautiful and imposing cathedrals in the world. It covers a full block, and the landmark is known the world over.
Originally, the plan was for a Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral, but in the second phase of construction, Gothic Revival features were brought in. Believe it or not, this NYC Attraction is considered unfinished despite the fact that the cornerstone was laid in 1892. A fire badly damaged the Cathedral of St. John in 2001, and extensive repairs and renovations were required.
If you’d like to visit the Cathedral of St. John Divine and do a little more than snap a few pictures, you can opt to take one of the guided tours offered at the NYC Attraction. Several tours are available. The Highlights Tour is a good choice for visitors who’d like to get an overview of the Cathedral. During the hour-long tour, you’ll learn a bit about the history, architecture, and art work of St. Johns.
A second tour option is the Vertical Tour. This is a great option for those who want a more in-depth look at this iconic landmark. This behind-the-scenes tour gives you the chance to climb up the spiral staircase and enjoy sweeping views of the city from the cathedral’s roof. You’ll get a closer look at some of the Attraction’s well-known features.
A third option is the Spotlight Tour. These are a collection of various tours that each focus on a different aspect of the cathedral. The Spotlight Tour schedule can be found online. If you see one that interests you then you should reserve your tickets right away as some of these tours sell out rather quickly.
While you’re there, be sure to stop by the pop-up shop to buy a memento of your visit. The shop sells books, bags, postcards, and other gifts. Add a visit to this Attraction during your next stay at our ideally-located Hotel in NYC.
