The Rock Center Tree Lighting Helps to Kick Off the Holiday Season
Enjoy live performances and the lighting of the nearly 100-foot tall tree at this popular NYC Event.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is one of the many popular holiday events in NYC. The first official Rock Center tree was erected in 1933, but the tradition actually began in 1931. It was the middle of The Great Depression, and some construction workers put up a little 20-foot tree and decorated it with garlands made by their families. Since that first tree, the celebration has grown—and so has the tree! The 2016 tree was an impressive 94-feet tall and weighed more than 15 tons.
The night the tree is lit for the first time is an exciting NYC event complete with celebrities, live music, and thousands of locals and visitors lining the street for a glimpse at the festivities. Many families plan a stay at our Central Park Hotel to attend this event as a way to kick off the holiday season.
In addition to the thousands who will attend the event live, millions more will watch on television as the Rock Center Tree Lighting has been broadcast live on NBC since 1997. The musical performances start at 7 p.m., but people start gathering well in advance. There is no charge to attend, and admittance to the viewing area is on a first-come, first-served basis.
- The Tree Lighting takes place on November 29, 2017
- The live performances will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- The tree will remain lit until January 7, 2018
- Event takes place at Rock Plaza between West 48th and West 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues
The tree remains lit until January 7, 2018. Once it is taken down, it is donated to Habitat for Humanity and the wood used to build homes for deserving families.
